MARION, Ind. (Results) -- Indiana Wesleyan University had an excellent performance on the track Saturday as the Wildcats hosted the Indiana Intercollegiate Little State Championship.
The men's team captured first place and the women finished second.
The Little State Championship is in its 104th year and is the oldest track meet in the United States. The meet features schools from Indiana that participate in NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III.
The men's team edged Vincennes University and University of Indianapolis to defend their title. IWU ended the day with 119 points with Vincennes at 115.5 points and Indianapolis at 109 points.
Josh Foss and John Bowman paced the Wildcats as each won two events.
Foss won the 800-Meter Run in 1:55.94 and the 1,500-Meter Run in 3:58.71. Foss also earned points for Indiana Wesleyan in the 5,000-Meter Run with a third place finish as he crossed the line in 15:07.01.
Indiana Wesleyan had two other runners score in the 5,000-Meter Run. Bryan Hazel ended second in 15:05.86 and Ethan Naylor was eighth in 15:24.29. Hazel also contributed a victory in the 3,000-Meter Steeplechase as he won the event in 9:21.90.
Bowman was dominant for the Wildcats in field events with two wins and a runner-up.
Bowman won the Discus at 52.56-meters/172-5 feet and also won the Hammer Throw in 59.60-meters/195-6 feet. The toss in the Hammer Throw set a new stadium record by nearly five meters.
For the women, Indiana Wesleyan scored 145 points for a runner-up finish. Indianapolis won the meet with 157.5 points.
Indiana Wesleyan scored a majority of their points in two distance events.
The Wildcats gained 25 points in the 5,000-Meter Run alone as IWU captured four scoring positions, including the top-three.
Beka Bentle won the event in 18:28.96 while Christy Bea was next in 18:35.74 and Ann Marie Lanzetta was third as she crossed the line in 18:41.06. All three runners broke the old stadium record for the event. Jessica Moffitt earned a point for IWU in the event as she placed eighth in 19:38.02.
Nearly as good as the 1,500-Meter Run for Indiana Wesleyan was the 800-Meter Run. Indiana Wesleyan collected 22 points in the event with four runners in the top-six spots.
Lindsey Waggoner was runner-up in 2:17.25 and Cassidy Wagner was third in 2:21.24. Amanda Johnson was third at 2:21.86 and Kailee Whitaker placed sixth with a time of 2:22.22.
In field events, Katelin Morgan earned a first place for the Wildcats in the Long Jump. Morgan earned a mark of 5.33-meters/17-6 feet.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete at the Anderson Invitation on Saturday, April 18 in Anderson, Indiana.
