EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Indiana Wesleyan University took part in the NAIA Men's and Women's Track and Field National Championships from May 21-23 in Edwardsville, Illinois on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
The championship meet was contested at Ralph Korte Stadium near St. Louis, Missouri.
Indiana Wesleyan finished tied for 17th place in the men's championship with Wayland Baptist (Texas) University. Both teams totaled 16 points. Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University tallied 80 points to defend their national title.
In the women's championship, Indiana Wesleyan tied with three other teams for 51st place. The Wildcats roped in three points. Wayland Baptist destroyed the field with 102 points to defend their title as well.
A total of 22 Wildcats competed in 13 events. The women sent 13 student-athletes to the national meet for seven events while the men had nine student-athletes in six events.
Six members of the track team earned NAIA All-American status for their performance at the national championships. John Bowman in Men's Discus, Bryan Hazel in the Men's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase and Lindsey Waggoner, Cassidy Wagner, Kailee Whitaker and Angi Wolgemuth in the Women's 3,200-Meter Relay. All-Americans were the top-six finishers in each event.
Bowman captured the highest finish of any Indiana Wesleyan student-athlete with a runner-up in the Men's Discus. Bowman's toss of 55.51-meters / 182-1 feet on his first throw of the competition was the high mark until the second to last throw in the event.
Hazel raced to a third place finish in the Men's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase with a time of 9:06.03. The time is also a new Indiana Wesleyan program record as Hazel smashed his previous record time of 9:18.59.
The Women's 3,200-Meter Relay team earned All-American status with a sixth place finish. Wolgemuth, Wagner, Whitaker and Waggoner crossed the line in a time of 9:12.44.
The Wildcat men also scored in two other events. James Schortgen finished eighth in the Javelin and Josh Foss crossed the line eighth in the 1,500-Meter Run. Schortgen and Foss each earned one point.
Also announced over the weekend were the Daktronics-NAIA Track and Field Scholar-Athletes. For the men, Doug Alles, Joel Liechty and Josh Schweigert earned the honor while Laura Bowman, Lindsey Carlson, Kristen Cline, Rachel Cline and Becky Zanellato were recognized on the women's team.
