MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- Both Indiana Wesleyan University tennis teams earned back-to-back undefeated Mid-Central College Conference championships on Saturday with wins over Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
The women earned a 9-0 shutout with the men capturing a 7-2 victory.
On the men's side, the Wildcats swept through the doubles competitions for a quick 3-0 advantage. Senior Ben Bischoff and junior Micah May won No. 1-doubles 8-6, senior Carson VandenBossche and partner junior Matt Pedersen captured the point in No. 2-doubles with an 8-2 victory and sophomore Luke Montgomery and freshman Daniel Stoddard won 8-6 in No. 3-doubles.
The Wildcats prevailed in four of the six singles matches to earn the 7-2 team victory.
Pedersen (6-2, 7-6) won No. 1-singles, VandenBossche (2-6, 6-2, 10-7) won No. 4-singles, Montgomery (6-3, 6-2) took the win in No. 5-singles and freshman Brooks Ayers (6-1, 6-2) earned the point in No. 6-singles.
Bischoff (6-4, 5-7, 5-7) lost in No. 2-singles and May (4-6, 6-4, 2-10) dropped the decision in No. 3 play.
For the women, the Wildcats had no problems all day long, beginning with the sweep in doubles contests.
Juniors Lisa Massey and Eva Delk won 8-1 in No. 1-doubles, freshmen Andrea Meyering and Lauren Wilson took an 8-0 victory in No. 2-doubles while senior Courtney Kooyers and junior Caitlin McGuire finished the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win in No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan then took all six points in singles play with straight set victories.
No. 1 Massey (6-3, 7-6), No. 2 Meyering (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 Delk (6-4, 6-1), No. 4 Wilson (6-0, 6-1), No. 5 Kooyers (6-2, 6-1) and No. 6 McGuire (6-0, 6-0) each earned the point in their respective contest.
The Indiana Wesleyan women finish the conference slate 8-0 while the men ran through the conference with an unblemished 7-0 mark. With the regular season conference crowns, both teams earned automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships in the spring.
