KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- With a 2-0 victory over No. 6-seed Covenant (Ga.) College on Thursday afternoon the Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer team is now one win shy of a second straight NCCAA national championship.
The biggest difference though is how the Wildcats reached the national title match. Last year Indiana Wesleyan entered the eight team tournament as the top-seed while this year IWU is the No. 7-seed.
Thursday's national semifinal match produced a 0-0 halftime score. Indiana Wesleyan nailed home the game-winning goal early in the second half before icing the match with a late score.
Sophomore midfielder Josh McKinley struck home the game-winning goal from an assist from junior defender Kyle Meier. Capping the semifinal victory was a score from junior forward David Trainer. He was assisted by sophomore forward Erik Johnson.
Last season, Indiana Wesleyan defeated Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College by a 2-0 margin to win the program's first ever national championship. This season, the Wildcats will play No. 5-seed Judson (Ill.) University in an attempt to win title number two.
Covenant drops to 12-6-2 on the season and will play Mid-America Christian (Okla.) University in the third place match.
Indiana Wesleyan's record improves to 11-10-1 and has won six of their last seven matches. During that span IWU has earned five shutouts.
The Wildcats will play for their second consecutive championship at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 5 in Kissimmee, Florida.
