MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men's basketball is the top-seed for the first time in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament which begins on Wednesday night.
Indiana Wesleyan won the program's first outright title this season with a 13-3 record in the MCC to capture home-court advantage throughout the tournament. The conference championship is the third overall in the last four years.
But the road through the MCC Tournament will be very difficult, beginning in the First Round. IWU will host No. 8-seed Huntington (Ind.) University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24 in Luckey Arena.
Huntington presents an unlikely first game for the top-seed as the Foresters were ranked No. 10 in NAIA Division II on December 7, 2009. Injuries were one reason the Foresters fell to the final spot in the MCC Tournament but now are healthy.
Indiana Wesleyan earned a two-game sweep this season against Huntington. IWU won 84-76 at Huntington on January 5 while earning a 74-60 victory at home on February 2. Indiana Wesleyan senior center Zach Coverstone averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds this season while sophomore guard Derrick Troyer provided 13.0 points off the bench.
The winning team on Wednesday will advance to the MCC Tournament Semifinals on Saturday, February 27 and face the winner of No. 4-seed University of Saint Francis (Ind.) and No. 5-seed Goshen (Ind.) College. Tip-off on Saturday will be at 3 p.m.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 2-seed Bethel (Ind.) College will battle No. 7-seed Marian (Ind.) University with No. 3-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University hosting No. 6-seed Grace (Ind.) College.
The MCC Tournament Championship will be contested at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2.
All games will be played at the site of the higher seed. The winner of the MCC Tournament will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships which will be played at Point Lookout, Missouri on March 10-16.
Tickets for all games will be $7 for adults and $2 for students. The only pass that will be accepted for the MCC Tournament is the Official NAIA Pass. Indiana Wesleyan VIP All Sports Passes, Indiana Wesleyan Faculty/Staff Athletic Passes and Indiana Wesleyan student IDs cannot be accepted for free entry.
For the MCC Tournament First Round games on Tuesday (women's) and Wednesday (men's), the first 100 Indiana Wesleyan students with their student IDs will earn free admission into the game.
