MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University continues to do things that no other men's basketball team has done in program history as the Wildcats earned the No. 3-seed at the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship.
The No. 3-seed is the highest ever for any Wildcat team. IWU has already made their mark this season with a program record 14-game win streak, the first outright Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship and the first MCC Tournament championship.
University of Virginia-Wise will represent the first round opponent for Indiana Wesleyan this season. The teams will unite for a 6:45 p.m. ET tip-off on Thursday, March 11.
Virginia-Wise is 17-12 on the season and earned an automatic bid to the national tournament by winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament. The national tournament appearance is the second in program history and UVA-Wise seeks its first win at the national tournament.
The Cavs finished the AAC regular season in a four-way tie for first place with Bluefield (Va.) College, Union (Ky.) College and Bryan (Tenn.) College. All four teams had 11-5 conference records. UVA-Wise earned the automatic bid with an 86-85 win over Union in the tournament championship.
No. 3-ranked Indiana Wesleyan earned the MCC automatic bid this season with a 78-68 victory over No. 10-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College on Tuesday night. IWU is 28-5 this season and have won 23 of their last 25 games.
The national championship tournament appearance is the third for the Wildcats and second consecutive trip. In their previous NAIA tournaments, IWU advanced to the Elite Eight in 2007 and 2009. The Wildcats are 4-2 all-time at the tournament.
The NAIA National Championship will be played March 10-16 in Point Lookout, Missouri.
