MARION, Ind. -- The annual Indiana Wesleyan University Polar Bear Outdoor Track and Field Invitational took place on Saturday under sunny conditions and near 60-degree weather.
The non-scoring meet hosted teams from all levels of competition with programs from NAIA and all three divisions of NCAA.
The Women's 4 x 100-Meter Relay, Laura Bowman and James Schortgen highlighted the afternoon for Indiana Wesleyan with qualifying marks for the NAIA National Track and Field Championships in May which will be hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.
Katelin Morgan, Lizzy Skinner, Chelsea Heyne and Bowman won the Women's 4 x 100-Meter Relay event on Saturday with a time of 48.73 seconds. The time qualifies the relay team for the national meet and was nearly three seconds better than the second place team, Sienna Heights (Mich.) University at 51.60 seconds.
Bowman double dipped in automatic qualifying. In addition to being a member of the 4 x 100-Meter Relay, Bowman qualified to the NAIA meet as an individual in the 100-Meter Dash. Her time of 12.58 seconds was good for first place by nearly three tenths of a second.
Schortgen was the men's national qualifier with a mark in the Javelin. His throw of 189 feet eight inches was third in the event, behind a pair of NCAA Division II throwers.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete in the DePauw Invitational in Greencastle, Indiana on April 3. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
