GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams took part in the annual DePauw Invitational on Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana.
In the 11-team invitational, the men captured second place while the women earned third in a meet with one NCAA Division I program and many NCAA Division III schools.
The men scored 110.5 points on Saturday for a very close runner-up finish to Wabash (Ind.) College with 111.5 points. Vincennes (Ind.) University was third with 110 points as the top three teams were with 1.5 points.
Sophomore Eric Brown was the only Wildcat to win an event for IWU. He won the Men's 400-Meter Dash in a time of 48.79 seconds.
Three Indiana Wesleyan student-athletes placed second with two coming in field events.
Freshman Seth Virgil leaped 22 feet 1.5 inches for second place in the Men's Long Jump while Virgil also earned third place in the Men's 200-Meter Dash in a time of 22.97 seconds. Fellow freshman Michael Jones earned a height of 6-4 feet for second in the Men's High Jump.
Senior Thomas Collet raced to a time of 11.18 seconds in the Men's 100-Meter Dash for the third runner-up spot.
The Men's 4 x 100-Meter Relay team crossed the finish line third in a time of 43.08 seconds. Freshman Kyle Abney was third in the Men's Shot Put with a mark of 46-5.5 feet and freshman Justin Schortgen threw 149-10 feet for third in the Men's Hammer Throw.
On the women's side, Indiana Wesleyan racked up 127 points for third place. Host DePauw won the invitational with 146 points and Illinois Wesleyan University was runner-up at 141 points.
Indiana Wesleyan totaled four first place finishes en route to the third place finish.
The Women's 4 x 100-Meter Relay team crossed the line in 48.98 seconds for 10 points for Indiana Wesleyan.
Three other first place finishes came in individual events.
Sophomore Victoria Lee threw a meet record 156 feet in the Women's Hammer Throw for the win. Teammate and senior Lindsey Carlson earned a mark of 146-7 feet in the same event for a third place finish as Indiana Wesleyan tallied 16 points in the event.
Indiana Wesleyan brought home another top spot in a field event when junior Katelin Morgan finished the Women's Long Jump with a mark of 17-8.75 feet. Junior Sarah Morgan won the only IWU individual track race on the day in the Women's 3,000-Meter Steeplechase. She won the event in a time of 12:15.49.
Katelin Morgan added a second place finish with her win in the Women's Long Jump. Morgan ran a time of 15.96 seconds in the Women's 100-Meter Hurdles for eight more Wildcat points.
Also finishing in second place was junior Kendra Aeschliman in the Women's Pole Vault with a height of 8-8.25 feet.
Four other Wildcats had third place finishes.
The Women's 4 x 400-Meter Relay team ran a 4:12 while senior Laura Bowman sped to a time of 12.66 seconds in the Women's 100-Meter Dash. Senior Tasha Cappella threw a mark of 37-2.5 feet in the Women's Shot Put and senior Marta Tillet earned a distance of 111-4 feet in the Women's Javelin Throw for third place marks.
Indiana Wesleyan will return to the track next week as IWU hosts the annual Little State meet. The meet, with Indiana colleges from NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III, will be contested at the Outdoor Sports Complex in Marion on April 9-10.
