MARION, Ind. -- The championship bracket for the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship was released and Indiana Wesleyan University learned its first round opponent.
Indiana Wesleyan will open with Xavier University of Louisiana. The first round match will be at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, May 18. The 24-team national championship is being contested at the Mobile Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.
Xavier is an automatic qualifier after winning the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. The national tournament appearance is the fifth in program history and the third straight. Xavier is 16-13 this season and was ranked No. 19 in the final NAIA Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Indiana Wesleyan is making its 11th national tournament appearance and is tied with Auburn (Ala.) University-Montgomery, Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) College and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) University for most all-time. The five teams have made the tournament every year since 2000 when the team format began.
IWU is 21-3 on the season and earned an automatic bid to the NAIA by winning the Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship in the fall. The Wildcats ranked No. 17 in the final national poll of the year.
The winner of the match will advance to the second round and play top-seed Auburn-Montgomery. That match will be at 10 a.m. ET on Wednesday, May 19.
