MASON, Ohio -- It took 12 innings on Wednesday morning and a five run comeback but Indiana Wesleyan University baseball advanced in the NCCAA World Series at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
No. 9-seed Indiana Wesleyan quickly trailed 5-0 to No. 8-seed King (Tenn.) College after three innings of play but would come back with a 9-7 victory. The big inning for IWU was a six run fifth inning.
On two occasions the Wildcats had a chance to win with three outs to go. The Wildcats took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh and again took a one run lead of 7-6 into the bottom of the eighth. Each time the Tornado (28-15) scored one run to force the game to continue.
Finally in the top of the 12th inning Indiana Wesleyan plated a pair of unearned runs for a 9-7 advantage. Ryne Brown entered in the bottom half of the inning for the save. He did not allow a run on one hit and earned one strikeout.
Freshman Michael Caley came up huge in relief for the Wildcats. Caley was called upon in the fourth inning and he promptly shut down the Tornado over the next eight innings. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five in picking up the win.
Shortstop Ben Zachary had a huge morning with a 3-for-6 game at the plate. He doubled twice and knocked in three runs. Designated hitter TJ Fletcher, centerfielder Quinn Nofziger, rightfielder Derek Freds and second baseman Brice Davis all produced two hits in the win. Nofziger and Freds each scored two runs while Fletcher collected two stolen bases.
Indiana Wesleyan (28-37) will next play later tonight at 9 p.m. against No. 1-seed and reigning national championship Bluefield (Va.) College.
