MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University women's basketball head coach Steve Brooks announces his second signing for the 2010-2011 basketball season. Paige Smith, a transfer from Grand Valley State (Mich.) University, has signed a letter of intent to further her education and play basketball and throw discus at IWU.Smith will have three years of eligibility remaining at Indiana Wesleyan.
Smith, a 5-11 post, averaged 3.1 points and 1.3 rebounds per game during her freshman season at Grand Valley State.Smith's season was highlighted by scoring a season-high 13 points and grabbing a season-high six rebounds against Drury (Mo.) University and also having scored seven points and pulling down four rebounds against Michigan State University.
During her prep career, Smith was a standout at Hamilton Southeastern High School (Fishers, Ind.) where she was four-year starter.Smith averaged12.6 points and7.3 rebounds while ranking in the top-10 in the state in field goal percentage (63.1-percent) during her senior season and was recognized as Honorable Mention All-State and nominated for the McDonald's All-American team.She also set school records for career rebounds (539) and career field goal percentage (57.1-percent).
In addition to her achievements on the basketball court, Smith enjoyed much success as a track athlete.Smith won the state championship her senior year in the discus with a throw of 146 feet and was also recognized as Academic All-State.Smith is also the first athlete in Hamilton Southeastern history to earn 12 varsity letters (volleyball, basketball, track).She was honored as the Hamilton County Athlete of the Year and the Indianapolis Star Female Suburban Athlete of the Year following her senior year.
Smith said, "I chose to attend Indiana Wesleyan because I know that I will be going somewhere where the people truly care about me.I know that after leaving IWU that not only will I be a better basketball player and overall athlete but I will also be a better person as well.I am looking forward to being a part of something that is bigger than me and something that is truly special.Also, I know an education from Indiana Wesleyan will carry me throughout my life once athletics are over."
