EL CAJON, Calif. -- Juniors Erik Johnson and Zach Grantham scored less than a minute apart early in the second half to lead Indiana Wesleyan University men's soccer to a 3-0 season opening win over San Diego Christian (Calif.) College in El Cajon, California.
Johnson broke a scoreless tie in the 54th minute for a 1-0 Wildcat lead. His chip shot from 25-yards out arched high over the goalkeeper for the eventual game-winning goal after the keeper came out to challenge Johnson on the play.
Just 54 seconds later Indiana Wesleyan struck again.
Senior Mitch Lobdell broke into the box from the left side and played the ball into the middle. Sophomore Lucas Carpenter drilled a shot off the crossbar but Grantham hit the rebound shot into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead in the 55th minute.
Indiana Wesleyan added a third and final goal in the 75th minute. Junior Ross Tanzer connected on a one shot volley off an assist from Carpenter, who chipped the ball in to Tanzer from 25 yards out.
Junior Nick Platt earned the victory for the Wildcats in goal. He stopped the only San Diego Christian shot on goal in over 81 minutes of action. Platt was joined by freshman Dylan McCauley for the team shutout.
Indiana Wesleyan outshot the hosts 13-7 on the evening and held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Wildcats move to 1-0-0 this season while the Hawks fall to 0-1-0.
