NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- The 2011-12 men's tennis season opened with an exciting match Saturday as Indiana Wesleyan University squeaked by IU-Southeast 5-4 in New Albany, Indiana.
The Wildcats (1-0) began the day with a 2-1 lead after three doubles matches. Juniors Brooks Ayers and Daniel Stoddard finished No. 2-doubles play with an 8-5 win while senior Luke Montgomery and sophomore Alex Hornett cruised to an 8-2 victory. In No. 1-doubles competition, sophomore Adam Wroughton and freshman Kyle Johnston lost a hard fought 9-8 match.
Indiana Wesleyan then split the six singles matches with the Grenadiers to earn the team win 5-4.
Johnson took the win in No. 1-singles 6-4, 7-6, Ayers earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory in No. 4-singles and Stoddard won No. 5-singles 6-3, 6-2. Wroughton lost 3-6, 3-6 in No. 2-singles, Montgomery lost a marathon match 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 while Hornett dropped the No. 6-singles match 1-6, 4-6.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31 with their Mid-Central College Conference opener at Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
