MISHAWKA, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis team opened the Mid-Central College Conference campaign Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win at Bethel (Ind.) College in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Indiana Wesleyan began the afternoon with two wins in doubles before taking five of six points in singles play to improve 2-0 overall and 1-0 in MCC play.
Freshman Kyle Johnson and sophomore Adam Wroughton won the point in No. 1-doubles with an 8-3 victory while senior Luke Montgomery and sophomore Alex Hornett also won 8-3 in No. 3-doubles. The lone loss in doubles came at the No. 2-spot as juniors Brooks Ayers and Daniel Stoddard fell 7-9.
Johnson won 7-6, 6-3 in the top singles match and Montgomery earned a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 3-singles. Ayers captured the point in No. 4-singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win, Stoddard won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 5-singles and Hornett finished with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in No. 6-singles. Wroughton was the lone loss in No. 2-singles by a 2-6, 3-6 score.
Indiana Wesleyan returns to action at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 2 as IWU hosts University of Northwestern Ohio at the Sutter Tennis Center.
