MOUNT VERNON, Ohio -- Indiana Wesleyan University made its first volleyball match with the newest Mid-Central College Conference program a success in four games Friday night.
Indiana Wesleyan defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University 3-1 by scores of 25-20, 27-25, 20-25, 25-13 in the first MCC match between the two schools in any sport.
The Wildcats overcame the Cougars with a balanced offensive attack with four players in double digit kills. Senior middle hitter Peyton Thompson led the way with 15 kills while senior outside hitter Kate Denlinger added 12. Junior outside hitter Brooke Atwell and sophomore middle hitter Kristine Egebrecht each contributed 10 kills. Atwell had a .400 hitting percentage on the evening.
Junior setter Yui Iwase passed out 56 assists on the night and was one of four Wildcats with double digit digs with 11. Senior libero Kelsey Masuda collected 26 digs while sophomore defensive specialist Rebecca Brandes added 15 and junior defensive specialist Jordan Sudzina chipped in with 10.
Indiana Wesleyan served 11 aces in the match. Iwase and Sudzina each had three while Thompson served two.
The Wildcats improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the MCC while Mount Vernon Nazarene tumbles to 6-8 and 1-4 in conference play.
IWU returns to the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21 with a MCC contest at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University.
