FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University volleyball team continued its winning ways Friday night with a 3-2 victory over No. 16-ranked Madonna (Mich.) University in the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 15-12 over Madonna is the ninth straight for Indiana Wesleyan and second consecutive victory over a ranked opponent. IWU quickly dispatched No. 25-ranked IU-East on Wednesday in three games.
Senior setter Yui Iwase assisted on 52 kills versus Madonna while also picking up seven digs. Iwase assisted senior outside hitter Kate Denlinger for 14 kills, junior outside hitter Brooke Atwell for 12, sophomore middle hitter Kristine Egebrecht for 10, senior outside hitter Peyton Thompson for nine and senior middle hitter Lauryn Barfell for seven.
The Wildcats blocked 13 Crusader attacks at the net. Barfell blocked two attempts and assisted on five others. Thompson added a solo block and three assists, Egebrecht was credited with five assists and Denlinger with four assists.
Senior libero Kelsey Masuda was a big contributor for the Wildcats in the winning effort. She led the team in digs with 32 and in aces with four.
Indiana Wesleyan followed up the big win over Madonna with a 3-0 win over Campbellsville (Ky.) University. The 25-11, 25-20, 25-9 victory won the pool as Indiana Wesleyan will play in the gold division in Saturday's final day of play.
Thompson led the team with 12 kills and was closely followed by Egebrecht and Denlinger with 11 apiece. IWU completed the match with a .370 kill percentage.
Thompson earned two solo blocks and one assist while Barfell contributed one solo and two block assists. Overall, the Wildcats finished with seven blocks.
