MARION, Ind. -- The top-seeded Indiana Wesleyan University women's tennis team started the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament off with a solid 5-0 win against No. 8-seeded Huntington (Ind.) University on Tuesday afternoon.
Postseason conference tournament matches are contested until one team reaches five points and any remaining matches are stopped. Indiana Wesleyan quickly hit the five points starting with a sweep in doubles play.
Lauren Wilson and Andrea Meyering defeated won No. 1-doubles 8-3, while Aubrey Lohser and Kim Mella were victorious at No. 2-doubles with an 8-2 win. Sarah Richert and Diane Jones rounded out the sweep with an 8-2 victory at No. 3-doubles.
Going into singles play, the Wildcats needed only two matches to complete the win.
Wilson dominated at No. 3-singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory and Mella added the fifth point for the Wildcats at No. 6-singles with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win.
In the remaining singles matches, all four IWU players were up on their opponents. Heiniger led 6-2, 1-0 at No. 1-singles, Meyering was winning 6-0, 2-0 at No. 2-singles, Richert was ahead 6-2, 1-0 on her opponent at No. 4-singles and Jones was up 6-3, 1-0 at No. 5-singles.
With this victory, Indiana Wesleyan advances to the MCC Tournament semifinals versus Spring Arbor (Mich.) University. The match will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 at the Sutter Tennis Center.
