MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University women's tennis team earned a spot in the Mid-Central College Conference Tournament championship match with a 5-0 win over No. 5-seed Spring Arbor (Mich.) University at the Sutter Tennis Center.
The Wildcats will have their opportunity to sweep the MCC's regular season and postseason tournament championships on Saturday against Marian (Ind.) University. The winner of the match will clinch the conference's automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship which will take place in the spring season.
Indiana Wesleyan started the match with 3-0 sweep in doubles play.
Lauren Wilson and Andrea Meyering battled for an 8-6 victory at No. 1-doubles, while Rachael Heiniger and Sarah Richert were victorious at No. 2-doubles with an 8-5 win. Rounding out doubles play for IWU was Aubrey Lohser and Kim Mella who cruised to an 8-0 win.
Completing the win for the Wildcats were Meyering at No. 2-singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory and Richert at No. 4-singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The remaining Wildcats were still competing when the match came to its conclusion. Wilson was leading 7-5, 1-2 at No. 3-singles, Heiniger held a 6-4, 4-4 advantage at No. 1-singles, Jones was at 2-6, 6-1, 1-1 in No. 5-singles, and Mella was tied at 2-6, 6-3 in No. 6-singles.
With the victory, Indiana Wesleyan improves to 13-0 on the season. The MCC Tournament championship will be contested at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 8. As the top seed in the tournament, Indiana Wesleyan will host the match at the Sutter Tennis Center.
