MARION, Ind. -- Junior Kyle Abney and freshman Allix Miller are in midseason form as the Indiana Wesleyan University indoor track and field teams opened today at the IWU Classic in the Troyer Fieldhouse.
Abney and Miller knocked the Bowman husband and wife combination from the record books with their performances. In the process, each earned ‘A' standards for their work and will compete at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships later in the season.
Abney shattered the school record in the Shot Put with a measure of 16.76-meters/55-0 feet, previously set by IWU legend John Bowman. The throw was more than a meter farther than the ‘A' standard.
"Kyle's throw may place him in the top-two in the NAIA," said Indiana Wesleyan head coach John Foss. "His toss is well over the standard and it's exciting to see this early in the season."
Miller broke a nearly 10 year old school record in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 59.05 seconds. She bettered the ‘A' standard and won the event in her first collegiate competition. Miller added a second school record in the 200-Meter Dash with a time of 26.47 seconds which was previously set by Laura Bowman.
"It's exciting to see Allix perform so well in her first meet," said Foss. "The one record she beat was set in 2002 and the other was by Laura Bowman, so that is a great effort in her first meet."
Miller also joined sophomore Kyla Morgan and freshmen Anna Henry and Tracey Tiernon in the winning 4x200-Meter Relay team. The four underclassmen finished in a time of 1:49.22.
"It was a great first day," added Foss. "There were lots of great performances all around. Allix and Kyle were terrific and were well above the bar."
