MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams completed a strong performance this weekend at the Indiana Little State Championships hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.

Both Wildcat teams earned runner-up finishes at the meet which consists of Indiana programs at the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and Junior College levels. Twelve teams participated in the men's and women's championships which University of Indianapolis, a NCAA Division II program, won both.

Indianapolis edged Indiana Wesleyan in the men's meet by a 169-163 score. Vincennes was a distant third place with 115 points. In the women's championship, Indianapolis claimed the victory with 194.66 points with Indiana Wesleyan as the runner-up with 134 points and Bethel was third with 104 points.

Indiana Wesleyan had six results that were qualifying marks for the NAIA National Championships which will be held May 24-26 in Marion. Four from the men's team earned ‘A' standards while one from the women's earned an ‘A' and another hit the ‘B' standard.

James Schortgen and Geoff Getts each qualified with the ‘A' standard in the Men's Hammer Throw. Schortgen earned third in the event with a toss of 58.20-meters/190-11 feet while Getts placed seventh with a mark of 53.36-meters/175-1 feet.

Kyle Abney threw well beyond the ‘A' standard in the Men's Shot Put. His mark of 17.04-meters/55-11 feet was 1.50-meter beyond the ‘A' mark for the national meet. Abney placed fourth in the Men's Shot Put, behind three NCAA DII athletes.

Andy Lipiec qualified with the ‘A' standard in the Men's 110-Meter Hurdles preliminaries in a time of 14.60-seconds. Lipiec would run a 14.66-second race in the finals for a second place finish.

Victoria Lee threw two-meters beyond the ‘A' standard and set a new program record in the Women's Hammer Throw. Her toss of 52.24-meters/171-5 feet battered her own school record she set last year while winning the Little State championship.

Allix Miller had a ‘B' standard time in the Women's 400-Meter Dash. Her finals time of 57.17 seconds also earned her a second place finish.

The next time the Wildcats take to the track will be next Saturday, April 21 at the IWU Invitational. The meet begins at 11 a.m.
