MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University baseball brought an end to its eight game skid on Tuesday with a sweep of visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan (18-27, 10-16 MCC) won the games 3-2 and 7-5. The two losses knock Mount Vernon Nazarene out of third place in the conference standings to fourth.
The first game was highlighted by a terrific pitching performance from Michael Caley. He went the distance and allowed one earned run on seven hits. Caley did not have a walk or strikeout in the game as he improves to 3-5 this season.
The Wildcats jumped on top of the Cougars early in Game 1 with two runs in the first inning and another in the second for a 3-0 lead. Rightfielder Craig Dollens continues to drive in runs this season with a 2-run single to right in the first inning. Jacob Murphy singled down the leftfield line in the second inning for an RBI single. It was the fourth straight hit for the Wildcats.
Caley would get out of two early jams to keep Indiana Wesleyan on top. In the top of the second the first two MVNU batters reached base. But a double play and a ground out to third brought a close to the frame with no runs. In the third, Mount Vernon Nazarene opened the inning with a leadoff triple. A foul out and a pair of ground outs left him stranded.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (25-15, 16-10 MCC) scored their two runs in the sixth inning off Caley, with one being unearned due to a dropped fly ball. MVNU had two on before Caley got out of the inning with the lead on a fielder's choice groundout.
In the top of the seventh, the Cougar leadoff hitter reached on a singled and a sac bunt moved him to second. But Caley induced two weak fly balls for the Indiana Wesleyan victory.
Second baseman Jacob Murphy was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while shortstop Josh Ellis was 2-for-2 with a run. Indiana Wesleyan outhit MVNU 8 to 7 in the game.
Indiana Wesleyan used a five run second inning to pull away early from Mount Vernon Nazarene in Game 2. IWU would have to hold on for the win and the doubleheader sweep.
The first three Wildcats reached in the second inning which led to a 2-run double by first baseman Peter Engle. Later in the inning the bases were again loaded and Murphy came to bat and drove home two runs with a single to right field. Centerfielder Quinn Nofziger followed with a line drive double into the gap for the fifth run of the inning as IWU led 5-1 after two.
Mount Vernon Nazarene cut the deficit to 5-3 in the third but Indiana Wesleyan scored two more runs in the fourth for a 7-3 cushion. With the first two batters being retired, third baseman Preston Fugita hit a grounder to second that was booted. Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of the extra out. Following a Murphy single to put runners on the corner, Nofziger drilled a triple to deep right-center field to score two for the 7-3 lead.
Wildcat starting pitcher Ryne Brown allowed single runs in the fifth and sixth innings but no more as Indiana Wesleyan would win 7-5.
Brown allowed five earned runs in the complete game effort. He gave up 13 hits with two walks and two punch-outs as he improved to 6-4 this year.
The Wildcats won the second game despite being outhit 13-6. Murphy and Nofziger were the key components with two hits apiece at the top of the order. Murphy had two RBI while Nofziger finished with three.
