WINONA LAKE, Ind. -- Sam Lewis and Ryne Brown gave host Grace (Ind.) College fits on Saturday as Indiana Wesleyan University baseball swept a doubleheader in Winona Lake, Indiana.
Lewis and Brown surrendered just a single run between them in a pair of complete game wins. IWU won the opener 1-0 and claimed a 7-1 win in the nightcap for the sweep.
Lewis pitched a complete game shutout in the opener for the win. He scattered seven hits and two walks while striking out four in seven innings.
Indiana Wesleyan scored the lone run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. First baseman Peter Engle hit a sac fly to score designated hitter Javier Aponte for the eventual game-winning run. Aponte had reached first earlier in the frame on an error.
Catcher Alex Ridlen contributed two of the five hits for the Wildcats. Rightfielder Craig Dollens, leftfielder Seth White, and shortstop Josh Ellis all added hits in the win.
Brown was the pitching star in Game 2. He allowed one earned run in seven innings as he scattered six hits and one walk with five punch-outs.
Indiana Wesleyan scored one run in each of the first two innings for the quick 2-0 lead as Ridlen and second baseman Jacob Murphy each had RBI. IWU doubled up the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning. Third baseman Preston Fugita hit a long sac fly and Ridlen came through with a single for his second RBI of the game.
Grace scored their only run on Saturday in the bottom of the sixth inning. But Indiana Wesleyan got that run back and more in the top of the seventh. Dollens scored on a wild pitch and pinch hitter Jordan Baker later followed with a 2-run home run for the 7-1 lead. All three runs were scored with two outs.
Ridlen was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and Baker was 1-for-1 with the home run in the seventh.
Indiana Wesleyan and Grace will return to action with a second doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
