MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University and Grace (Ind.) College showcased strong pitching performances in both ends of a doubleheader today at Wildcat Field.
Indiana Wesleyan (22-29, 14-18 MCC) earned a 5-1 win in the opening game while Grace (14-29, 11-21 MCC) salvaged Game 2 with a 1-0 win. IWU took the season series 3-1 from Grace.
The teams combined for 12 hits the entire afternoon. The Wildcats outhit the Lancers 6-2 in Game 1 while the Lancers held a 3-1 advantage in Game 2.
Freshman Shane Bryant and junior Michael Caley each pitched complete games for the Wildcats. Bryant allowed just one run on two hits for his third win of the season. He walked one and struck out five in an 81-pitch outing. Caley matched Bryant in Game 2. Caley allowed one run on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. He finished the game with just 77-pitches.
Indiana Wesleyan took advantage of a wild Matt Helms in the first inning of Game 1. After a leadoff strikeout, the next three batters were hit by a pitch to load the bases. Designated hitter Javier Aponte and leftfielder Seth White each followed with a walk to score a run which led to Helm being taken out. First baseman Peter Engle greeted the new pitcher with a sac fly to deep leftfield for a 3-0 lead.
The three runs in that first inning would be all Bryant would need. He would retire the next eight batters in order before a walk and double scored the lone Lancer run in the fourth inning. He would then put the next eight batters down in order before he hit a Lancer to lead-off the seventh. But Bryant would retire the next three Lancers, including the last two with strikeouts.
Leftfielder CJ Sandmann had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double and one RBI. Catcher Alex Ridlen and White were each 1-for-2 with one RBI while courtesy runner Trey Shigley scored twice.
In Game 2, Caley pitched extremely well but was outperformed by Grace starting pitcher Clifford Buttermore. The junior right hander for Grace allowed one hit, a single by Ridlen in the first inning, with no walks and six strikeouts.
Besides Ridlen's single, only two other Wildcats reached base. Second baseman Jacob Murphy reached on an error in the third inning and third baseman Preston Fugita reached first on a passed ball on a swinging strike three.
Caley did not allow a run through six innings but was touched for the only run of the game in the seventh. Jeff Himes hit a one out triple to left-center field and then scored on a sac fly to right by Steven Hovermale.
Indiana Wesleyan will now move on to its final series of the regular season. IWU will travel to play Bethel (Ind.) College at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 26 in Mishawaka, Indiana. The two teams will then play at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 28 at Wildcat Field.
