MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in four events today in the first of three days at the NAIA National Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Kyla Morgan was the only individual to compete on Thursday as she was one of 16 athletes entered in the Women's Pentathlon. Morgan placed 14th in the field with 2,892 points. She earned the most points in the 60-Meters Hurdles with a time of 10.15 seconds and her second best competition was in the 800-Meter Run as she crossed the finish line in 2 minutes 36.58 seconds. Other events in the Pentathlon were the High Jump, Shot Put, and Long Jump.
Three relay team participated in prelims as well. None of the relay team qualified for finals on Friday or Saturday.
The Women's 4x800-Meter Relay team was the closest to advance as they just missed qualification by 1.28 seconds. The team of Julie Kamp, Kayla Ewert, Christina Sandberg, and Angel Gaesser ran a time of 9:25.49. IWU was fourth in their heat which saw the top two relay teams automatically advanced and finished 10th overall, less than two seconds behind the final qualifier in eighth place.
In the other women's relay race on Thursday, the Wildcats' team of Talia Benware, Gaesser, Tracey Tiernon, and Allix Miller raced in the Women's 4x400-Meter Relay. The quartet crossed the line in 4:01.35 to place fourth in their heat and 14th of 17 teams in the prelim.
The only men to compete for Indiana Wesleyan on the first day of competition were the Men's Distance Medley Relay team of Connor McKnight, Malcolm Dias, Hansen Martin, and Matthew Mitchell. The quartet did not qualify for the finals with a time of 10:32.06. IWU was sixth in their heat and were 19th of 22 teams in the prelim.
The NAIA National Championships continue on Friday in Geneva, Ohio. Four more Wildcats will compete with one being in a final and the other three in prelims. Allix Miller will take part in the Women's Long Jump finals at 2 p.m. Andy Lipiec and Jake Smith will compete in the Men's 60-Meter Hurdles prelims and semifinals while Andrew Albert races in the Men's 3,000-Meter Run prelims.
