KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The annual Spring Break trip is off to a great start for Indiana Wesleyan University baseball with a doubleheader sweep at Tennessee Temple (Tenn.) College on Monday in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Pitching fueled the doubleheader sweep as sophomore righty Shane Bryant and senior right hander Michael Caley each pitched complete games. Bryant surrendered two runs in the opening 5-2 victory while Caley allowed a single run as Indiana Wesleyan won 6-1.
In the opener, the Wildcats quickly put a run on the board in the first inning. Jacob Murphy led the game off with a double and later scored on a Brice Davis sac fly for the early 1-0 lead. The Wildcats added one more run in the fourth. Javier Aponte walked and courtesy runner Trey Shigley entered and stole second. Peter Engle followed with a single to score the run for the 2-0 lead after four.
Bryant ran into trouble in the fifth inning and was one pitch a way of getting out of the inning unscathed. But a two out, two run single tied the game 2-2.
The game headed into the seventh still tied. Indiana Wesleyan loaded the bases with one out in the top half and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Quinn Nofziger then hit into a groundout that scored one run and Davis added the third run of the inning with an infield single for the 5-2 lead. Bryant pitched the bottom of the seventh to earn the complete game victory.
In the second game, Tennessee Temple scored the game’s first run in the home half of the fourth. Caley unleashed a wild pitch for the Tennessee Temple 1-0 lead.
Indiana Wesleyan quickly responded in the top of the fifth with a 2-out rally. Davis put Indiana Wesleyan in the lead with a 2-run hit which was followed by Aponte’s 2-run hit for the 4-1 advantage. Engle knocked home the fifth 2-out run of the inning with a single as Indiana Wesleyan put up a five spot in the fifth.
The Wildcats added one more run in the sixth inning. Josh Ellis led off with a single and eventually scored on a Shigley sac fly for the 6-1 score.
Indiana Wesleyan improves to 4-2 on the season and has won four straight. IWU continues to journey south on their Spring Break journey and play again tomorrow at Point (Ga.) University in Atlanta, Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
