GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Despite losing 7-2 at Davenport (Mich.) University on Friday the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis team played much closer than the final score indicated.
In singles, Brandon Dubuque lost a three-set match 6-2, 4-6, 8-10 in No. 3-singles while Daniel Smith lost two very close sets 6-7, 5-7 in No. 6-singles. Leonard Mathews in No. 2-singles and Brooks Ayers in No. 5-singles each lost one tight set in their loss. Mathews dropped him match 6-7, 3-6 while Ayers fell 0-6, 5-7. Earning the only singles victory for Indiana Wesleyan was Kyle Johnson at 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the top match.
Dubuque and Mathews claimed the only win in doubles with an 8-6 victory in No. 2 competition. Johnson and Stoddard dropped an 8-4 decision in No. 1 play while Alex Hornett and Ayers lost 8-3 in No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan and Davenport are each receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll. IWU is now 15-3 while Davenport improves to 12-5.
