MOBILE, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis could not capture a victory in two pool play matches today at the NCCAA National Championship which is being held in Mobile, Alabama.
The Wildcats were shutout 6-0 in the morning match versus McMurry (Texas) University. Later in the day during the afternoon IWU was defeated 5-0 by Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College. The top two teams in the four team pool will advance to the national semifinals tomorrow afternoon.
McMurry swept Indiana Wesleyan in the opening match by a 6-0 margin.
Indiana Wesleyan nearly got a point from No. 2-doubles as Leonard Mathews and Brandon Dubuque lost a 9-8 battle. Daniel Smith and Brooks Ayers were also very competitive in an 8-5 loss at the No. 3 position. In the top doubles match, Kyle Johnson and Daniel Stoddard lost by an 8-2 score.
The No. 4 through No. 6-singles matches finished with McMurry victories to give the War Hawks enough points for the team victory at 6-0. The final three matches in progress were stopped as they had no bearing on the team score.
Falling in singles matches were Stoddard (1-6, 0-6) at No. 4, Ayers (1-6, 1-6) in the fifth position, and Smith (0-6, 3-6) in No. 6 play.
Indiana Wesleyan ended Tuesday on the wrong side of a 5-0 loss to Roberts Wesleyan. The loss pushed IWU to 0-2 in pool play with one match left to play. More information on the Roberts Wesleyan match will follow.
Indiana Wesleyan completes their pool play assignment tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. ET when IWU battles Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University.
