MOBILE, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis finished another successful season on Wednesday at the NCCAA National Championship in Mobile, Alabama.
Indiana Wesleyan fell 5-0 to Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University in the final pool play match. The loss dropped IWU to 0-3 in the pool to eliminate the Wildcats. Azusa Pacific won the pool with a perfect 3-0 record to advance to the national semifinals. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals that begin this afternoon.
Brooks Ayers and Daniel Smith had the best showing in doubles for the Wildcats in the No. 3 spot as the pair lost by an 8-3 margin. The No. 1-doubles team of Kyle Johnson and Daniel Stoddard plus the No. 2 team of Brandon Dubuque and Leonard Mathews both lost by 8-0 scores.
Azusa Pacific gained the first point in singles play when Smith retired in the first set. Smith trailed 0-5 when the match was called. APU then clinched the team victory when Johnson was defeated 0-6, 2-6 in No. 1-singles.
The 2012-13 men’s tennis season is now over and the team obtained a 19-8 overall record. Indiana Wesleyan marched through the Crossroads League schedule with a 7-1 record to win their first league title in three years.
