MOBILE, Ala. -- Indiana Wesleyan University wrapped up the NCCAA Women’s Tennis National Championship on a positive note with a 5-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) College in Mobile, Alabama.
Indiana Wesleyan finishes third in their pool at the national tournament with a 1-2 record. The top two teams in the two pools advance to the national semifinals. Fresno Pacific (Calif.) University won the pool with a 3-0 record and Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University took second with a 2-1 mark.
The Wildcats cruised to the 5-0 victory on Wednesday, including big wins in the doubles matches. Lauren Wilson and Andrea Meyering won 8-3 in No. 1-doubles, Katie Wilson and Kim Mella earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2-doubles, and Rachael Heiniger and Kristen Futrell finished with an 8-1 win at No. 3-doubles.
Indiana Wesleyan quickly got the necessary two points in singles to wrap up the team victory. Futrell won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5-singles and Mella was victorious 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 6 position. Katie Wilson (No. 2), Meyering (No. 3), and Lauren Wilson (No. 4) all won their first set and were either leading or tied in the second set when the match was called. Heiniger trailed 6-5 in the first set of No. 1-singles play.
Indiana Wesleyan will stay in Mobile for the next week in preparation for the NAIA National Championship. The NAIA tournament is held in the same location as the NCCAA nationals and begins on Tuesday, May 14.
