MOBILE, Ala. -- The season for the Indiana Wesleyan University women’s tennis team came to a close Wednesday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to No. 1-ranked Xavier (La.) University in the NAIA National Championship Second Round in Mobile, Alabama.
No. 17-ranked Indiana Wesleyan completes another successful season in 2012-13 with a 24-4 record. IWU earned a perfect 8-0 mark in the Crossroads League to win the program’s 21st consecutive league championship. The win clinched the 14th straight trip to the NAIA National Championship, a record tied with Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.).
The Wildcats played well in doubles matches against the top-ranked Gold Nuggets. The best performance came from the No. 2-team of Katie Wilson and Kim Mella who lost 8-4. Rachael Heiniger and Kristen Futrell fell by an 8-3 margin in No. 3-doubles while the No. 1-doubles team of Lauren Wilson and Andrea Meyering dropped an 8-1 decision.
Xavier quickly won two singles matches to clinch the team victory 5-0. Once Xavier had enough points for the victory, the other four singles matches were stopped and were not finished. Heiniger was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in the top-singles match and Meyering lost 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3-singles.
Indiana Wesleyan advanced to the NAIA National Championship Second Round to play Xavier with a win on Tuesday over No. 16-ranked College of Coastal Georgia. The First Round victory was by a 5-4 margin and was the 10th win all-time for Indiana Wesleyan at the national tournament.
Xavier advances to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals that will be played tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET. Xavier will play the winner of SCAD Savannah (Ga.) and Concordia (Calif.) University.
