VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Despite frigid temperatures on Saturday the Indiana Wesleyan University men’s tennis team opened their spring season at Valparaiso (Ind.). The teams played indoors at the Courts of Northwestern Indiana.

Valparaiso came out with a 7-0 victory in their first match of the year. IWU drops to 0-1 during the spring and 9-6 overall.

In NCAA play, doubles counts as one point, which Valpo swept by a 3-0 score. Kyle Johnson and Brandon Dubuque lost 8-3 in the top match, Leonard Mathews and Gavin White lost 8-1 in the second doubles match, and Adam Wroughton and Daniel Smith fell 8-2 in the third match.

Two Wildcats would force a third set before losing the match 2-1. Johnson did so in No. 1-singles by a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 decision while White was defeated 7-5, 5-7, 11-9 in No. 4-singles.

Dubuque lost 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2-singles and Mathews fell 6-3, 6-3. Smith dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision in the fifth match while Wroughton lost 6-1, 6-2 in No. 6-singles.

Indiana Wesleyan will not compete again for nearly two months. IWU will host Purdue Calumet (Ind.) on March 14 at the Sutter Tennis Center.
