MARION, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University men’s soccer student-athletes David Lopez-Cepero and David Reed were awarded for their play for the week ending October 21.
Despite losing two of three matches this week, the Wildcats claimed the Mid-Central College Conference regular season championship with a 1-0 victory on the road at Goshen (Ind.) College.
Lopez was honored by the NCCAA and was named the Student-Athlete of the Week in men’s soccer. His goal in the 31st minute of action off a free kick was the eventual game-winner. A Goshen win would have given the Maple Leafs home-field advantage throughout the conference tournament, but Lopez and the Wildcats earned the advantage with the hard-fought victory.
Reed was named the MCC Defensive Player of the Week. He was instrumental on the defensive side of the ball in the important match against Goshen. Reed and the defense shutout the Maple Leafs to secure the top-seed in the upcoming MCC tournament.
Indiana Wesleyan is 14-3-1 this season.
The Wildcats return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, as Indiana Wesleyan hosts Grace (Ind.) College in the opening round of the MCC tournament.
