CLEVELAND, Ga. -- The 2017 Indiana Wesleyan University baseball season is underway as they split a doubleheader at Truett McConnell (Ga.) in Georgia on Friday. IWU started a pair of freshmen on the mound and each threw five scoreless innings.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Neither team dented the scoreboard in the first six innings. Brady West broke the scoreless tie with a sac fly to score Hayden Castor in the top of the 7th inning to give Indiana Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.
  • Kyle Hall attempted to finish the Wildcat shutout and struck out the first two TMU batters in the bottom of the 7th. But a walk and three straight hits scored the game-tying and game-winning runs for Truett McConnell.
  • Jon Young was excellent in his first collegiate start as he did not allow a run in 5.0 innings of work. He gave up three hits and did not allow a walk while striking out three.
  • Caleb Eder and Andrew Breytenbach had the only Wildcat hits in the first game.

     

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Caleb Eder hit a sac fly in the 1st inning for an early 1-0 Indiana Wesleyan lead.
  • Brady West hit a sac fly and Brandon Shaffer ripped an RBI double to give Indiana Wesleyan a 3-0 lead after two innings.
  • In the 6th inning, Tanner Killian was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home a run and a wild pitch followed to score another as the Wildcats took a 5-0 lead.
  • Austin Swift and Tim Olvaney combined to throw a three hit shutout. Swift surrendered two hits and two walk in 5.0 inning in his first collegiate appearance while Staff finished the win with one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings.
  • Jordan Wharton reached base three times as he was 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and a walk.
  • Ryan Bixler was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

     

NEXT TIME OUT

  • Indiana Wesleyan and Truett McConnell play a second straight doubleheader on Saturday in Cleveland, Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
