POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. -- No. 1 Union (Ky.) used a 21-6 run early in the game en route to a 92-80 win over No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan University in the 2017 NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball National Championship Semifinals. The loss ends a bid by the Wildcats to win their third national title in four years.

  • Union has won 32 consecutive games. Their last loss came on November 8, 2016 to NAIA Division I No. 10-ranked Pikeville (Ky.).
  • Union won the rebound battle 45-33. The 17 offensive rebounds for Union was the second most this season for an Indiana Wesleyan opponent.
  • IWU committed 19 turnovers which is tied for the most in a game this season. It is actually the first time this season in seven games that IWU committed more turnovers than their opponent and lost.
  • The Bulldogs lead the nation in steals and finished the game with 12.
     

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Paul Stone hit baskets on back-to-back possessions to give Union an 11-9 lead and it was a lead they did not relinquish again. The Stone buckets were part of a 21-6 run that resulted in a 23-13 lead.
  • The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half to extend their lead to 52-35. The Wildcats rolled off an 11-2 spurt to draw within eight at 54-46.
  • Minutes later Union scored 11 unanswered points to gain a 70-50 lead with the 20 points being the largest of the night. Union capped the hot stretch with three straight 3-pointers which came in a 59 second span.
  • Indiana Wesleyan responded with 10 straight points to draw within 10 at 70-60 with 7:21 remaining. IWU was unable to get any closer until two Joel Okafor free throws brought the score to 83-74 with 1:46 on the clock. A quick foul led to two Union free throws and IWU could not get any closer.
     

2,000 POINT CLUB

  • Bob Peters bucket with under five minutes left in the game pushed him over 2,000 career points at Indiana Wesleyan. He finishes his career with 2,004 points and is the sixth member of the prestigious club and joins classmate Lane Mahurin (No. 3 with 2,288 points) as two of the six members.
     

SENIOR CLASS SUCCESS

  • The senior class of Nate Bubash, Lane Mahurin, Aaron Murray, and Bob Peters leave Indiana Wesleyan with a lasting legacy. The quartet finish with a four year record of 126-22 (.851), a 59-13 (.819) record in Crossroads League play, and a 15-2 (.882) record at the NAIA Division II National Championship. They won two NAIA Division II National Championships, advanced to the NAIA Final Four, and the NAIA Elite Eight. The class finished first or second all four years in the Crossroads League regular season and Crossroads League Tournament.

    “I am proud of this team and what they have accomplished. We are turning the page as a program in terms of Lane and Bob leaving. We have some new guys and we need to recruit some talent.”
     
  • On senior class and the legacy they leave…
    “I told them how much I loved them and how many memories we have these past four years. Everyone will remember the national championships and Final Four, but at the end of the day we had incredible conversations and incredible experiences all over the world. These guys came in here as boys but I really mean it when I say they are leaving as men.”
     
  • On Union…
    “Union is a very good basketball team. They have won 32 in a row for a reason.”
