MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan women’s tennis team was honored at the NAIA National Championship Banquet for scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship, outreach, and character.

Indiana Wesleyan was awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Character Team Award for the second consecutive season.

The NAIA website describes the award:  The Buffalo Funds Five-Star Champions of Character Team Award is presented at the end of the season for each of the NAIA's 23 championship sports. Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate in every day decisions integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.

“I consider this to be the highest award given by the NAIA,” said Wildcat head coach Eddy Shigley. “We are being recognized by other coaches as a team that plays with integrity and sportsmanship. Our core values include loving our opponents, treating them with dignity and respect, and to win with grace and lose with honor. This award shows that a team can compete on the highest level and at the same time be kind to their opponents. Our girls are doing an outstanding job of representing Indiana Wesleyan and Jesus Christ. I am thankful for this award and blessed to be coaching such a wonder group of girls.”

Indiana Wesleyan was also recognized with the NAIA ITA East Region Community and Outreach Award.

Seven Wildcats were honored for their work in the classroom as NAIA Scholar-Athletes. They are:  Rachel Bottorff, Ellen Hornett, Mikayla Marazzi, Kelsey Vessels, Jennifer Lee, Makenzie Estrem, and Morgan Smith.

Rachel Bottorff was named the NAIA ITA East Region Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The award takes into account a player’s tennis accomplishments, scholastic achievements, and extracurricular endeavors in addition to sportsmanship, leadership, and character.
