INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University track and field competed at the Little State Championship over the weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana.

NAIA, NCAA Division II and III schools from Indiana all competed in the track invitational. The Wildcat men captured the team championship out of 19 teams while the women were runner-up of 18 teams.

The men earned 123 team points, the most in school history, as the Wildcats won the meet title for the first time in program history. University of Indianapolis finished second with 110 points.

Indiana Wesleyan had four men punch their ticket to the NAIA Nationals with their performance over the weekend. Qualifying for the national meet were freshman James Shortgen in the javelin (195-2), junior John Bowman in the hammer throw (160-7), senior Elias Rojas (31:59.65) and senior Dan Ballard (32:18.28) in the 10,000-meter run.

Bowman in the discus (177-5) and senior Zach Weber (14.69) in the 110-meter hurdles each improved their mark for the nationals.

Shortgen's mark in the javelin and Bowman's throw in the discus are new Indiana Wesleyan program records.

Capturing individual events victories for Indiana Wesleyan were Rojas in the 10,000-meter run, Weber in the 110-meter hurdles, junior Josh Foss in the 1,500-meter run (3:56.91) and 5,000-meter run (15:11.98), Shortgen in the javelin and Bowman in the discus.

Head coach John Foss was named the 2008 Little State Championship Men's Coach of the Year.

For the women, Indiana Wesleyan's 123 points was second only to Indianapolis with 152. IWU finished the meet as runner-up for the fifth time in the last seven years.

Freshman Katelin Morgan automatically qualified for the NAIA in the long jump (18-1.5) while senior Emily LaSala improved her time in the 5,000-meter run (17:56.19). Morgan's long jump set a new program record at Indiana Wesleyan.

Winning individual events for the Wildcats were sophomore Laura Bowman in the 100-meter dash (12.59), Morgan in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.67), LaSala in the 5,000-meter run, the 4 x 400-meter relay team (4:08.98) and Morgan in the long jump.

The men improve to 29-0 during the outdoor season while the women are now 25-2.

Indiana Wesleyan returns to the track at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19 as the Wildcats compete in the Anderson (Ind.) University Invitation.
