Men's Basketball - Mon, Oct. 9, 2017

MARION, Ind. – The Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball team recently traveled to Hocking Hills State Park in Logan, Ohio for the 6th Annual Father-Son Retreat.

The retreat is a time for fathers and sons to build their relationships by creating memories through activities and intentional sharing times. During the weekend trip, the fathers and sons go hike, do ropes courses, ride zip lines, and sit around a campfire. Members of the team lead devotions, testimonies, and conversations.

Coach Tonagel's Perspective of Father-Son Retreat

The Father-Son Retreat has become an annual event that has strengthened the relationships within our program. There are not many more relationships on this earth more important than a father and a son.  This weekend gives us an opportunity to celebrate that. There is something special about sitting around a campfire with your dad telling stories, laughing, and remembering many of the good times growing up.

An interesting dynamic seems to happen each year on these trips.  On one hand, I witness the dads jumping back into boyhood as they engage in the fun activities such as paintball or white water rafting.  Then on the other, I witness the young men jump forward into manhood as they participate in these mature conversations with their dads about life and faith. These trips become truly special experiences that we get to hold onto for our entire lives.

Player Perspective from Senior Ben Carlson

The highlight of the Father-Son Retreat every year is just seeing how much joy it brings all of our dads. It is amazing to see the similarities that we have in our relationship with our earthly father and with our Heavenly Father. Both just want more time with us.

The way it has helped me grow closer to my dad is just by spending intentional 1-on-1 time. The trip encourages spiritual talks with our dads so we can connect on a new level.

Player Perspective from Senior Jacob Johnson

The Father-Son Retreat has been a huge highlight of my time here at IWU. The growth experienced between my dad and me has been awesome and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The intentional time spent with my dad for a weekend is something we will always cherish and remember and having that each year is something my dad is always excited for and looks forward to. The Father-Son Retreat is an incredible way to kick-start each season and allows dads and sons to connect on a deeper spiritual and emotion level than ever.
