
GOSHEN, Ind. -- Indiana Wesleyan University had an impressive showing this weekend at the Mid-Central College Conference Championships in Goshen, Indiana as the men won their second consecutive title and the women were runner-up.
For the eighth straight conference meet, the Wildcat women placed in the top two while the men have accomplished the same feat for three straight years.
Ten Wildcats earned All-Conference honors for their performance. In addition, Indiana Wesleyan earned Men's Coaching Staff of the Year.
On the men's side, senior Zach Weber, sophomore Thomas Collett, junior John Bowman, senior Dan Ballard, junior Josh Foss and freshman James Schortgen all earned conference honors. Freshman Katelin Morgan, senior Emily LaSala, sophomore Laura Bowman and junior Becky Zanellato were named All-MCC for the women.
Indiana Wesleyan captured the men's title with 201.5 points while Bethel (Ind.) College was runner-up with 174.5 points and Taylor (Ind.) University placed third with 173 points.
The men won their second straight conference title behind nine individual event championships out of 21 events.
The Indiana Wesleyan 4 x 800-meter relay team raced to first place in a time of seven minutes 57.60 seconds, five seconds ahead of second place Bethel. The team consisted of freshman Jason Wenzel, senior David Slabaugh, senior Josh Miller and Foss.
Ballard prevailed by 15 second in the 10,000-meter run in a time of 32:40.55 and Weber succeeded in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.12 seconds. Weber also attained first place in the high jump with a mark of six feet eight inches.
Foss won two more events in addition to being a member of a winning relay team. He gained a victory in the 1,500-meter run in 3:56.97 and the 5,000-meter run in 15:24.53.
Bowman was victorious in the discus throw in a mark of 181-8 feet and the hammer throw in 174-7 feet. Schortgen completed the javelin throw with a toss of 190-8 feet to prevail with the event victory.
For the women, Indiana Wesleyan and Bethel easily out-distanced the rest of the field. Bethel triumphed with 217 points as IWU ended with 187 points. Goshen (Ind.) College was third with a distant 92 points.
Indiana Wesleyan secured five individual event championships out of the 21 events.
LaSala paced the Wildcats with a pair of victories. She outran the field in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:06.87 and then dominated in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 39:50.51, more than two minutes ahead of second place.
The Wildcats' 4 x 100-meter relay team triumphed in a finishing time of 48.50 seconds. Relay team members were Morgan, junior Kristen Cline, Zanellato and Bowman.
In addition to success on the relay team, Bowman captured individual success in the 100- meter and 200-meter dash. She won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.81 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 26.55 seconds.
