MARION, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's track and field team utilized six individual championships to capture the 2008 NCCAA National Championship this weekend on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan.

The Wildcats totaled 163.5 points to separate from the rest of the field. Malone (Ohio) College ended as runner-up with 124 points while fellow MCC members Taylor (Ind.) University and Bethel (Ind.) College tied for third place with 112 points.

Indiana Wesleyan was bestowed as the Men's Staff of the Year for their excellence during the season and at the national championships.

Indiana Wesleyan junior John Bowman was awarded the prestigious Wheeler Award, presented to the student-athlete who excels in track and field while perpetuating the Christian philosophy and faith.

Bowman scored in three events for the Wildcats and won two individual national championships. He earned first in the discus throw with a mark of 191 feet three inches and the hammer throw with a toss of 181-7 feet. Bowman also placed fourth in the shot put at 49-7.25 feet.

Junior Josh Foss also reigned in a pair of individual championships as he won the 1,500-meter run in three minutes 57.11 seconds and the 5,000-meter run in 15:04.25. Foss also teamed with senior Josh Miller, senior David Slabaugh and freshman Jason Wenzel in the 4 x 800-meter relay to achieve runner-up in a time of 7:47.17.

Wenzel also raced to a second place finish in the 800-meter run in 1:55.48.

Senior Zach Weber obtained an individual championship in addition to a runner-up. Weber leaped 6-8 feet to win the high jump while running 14.44 seconds to place second in the 110-meter hurdles.

Junior James Schortgen secured the win in the javelin throw with a mark of 172-11 feet.

Sophomore Thomas Collet earned points in three events for Indiana Wesleyan, highlighted by a second place finish in the long jump. He earned a mark of 22-7.25 feet for the runner-up spot. Collet also finished the 200-meter dash in 21.99 seconds to earn fourth place and 11.00 seconds in the 100-meter dash for fifth place.

Senior Elias Rojas produced points in the 5,000-meter run with a fifth place finish in 15:32.08 and the 10,000-meter run with a second place finish in 32:25.67.

Junior Bryan Hazel completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:35.35. The time gave him a second place finish.

Indiana Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, May 10, as the Wildcats compete in the Bill Hayes Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana.
