
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The New York Mets drafted Indiana Wesleyan University starting pitcher Brandon Moore in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball first year player draft on Friday.
Moore was chosen 434th overall and is the first Wildcat chosen in the draft since 1970.
Some notable players recently drafted in the 14th round are: shortstop Khalil Greene by the Chicago Cubs in 2001, first baseman Jay Gibbons by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1998, relief pitcher Keith Foulke by the Detroit Tigers in 1993, catcher Jose Molina by the Cubs in 1993 and shortstop Alex Gonzalez by the Blue Jays in 1991.
Scouts were prevalent this season at Indiana Wesleyan games as Moore earned acclaim for his dominance. Moore was named the Mid-Central College Conference, NAIA Region VIII and NCCAA Player of the Year and was named NAIA All-American Second Team and NCCAA All-American First Team.
Moore finished his senior season with a 10-3 record as he compiled a 1.73 earned run average and a .188 batting average against. In 93-2/3 innings pitched, Moore struck out 131 batters while only walking 24. He threw two complete game shutouts this season and never allowed more than three earned runs in an outing.
In seven of his 14 starts, Moore struck out at least 10 batters. Moore struck out a career-high 14 batters in his final start as Indiana Wesleyan defeated Bluefield (Va.) College in the NCCAA World Series. He earned the win as he allowed three runs, pitching all 10 innings.
