UPLAND, Ind. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's tennis team upended Grant County rival Taylor (Ind.) University by a 5-4 margin on Tuesday afternoon in Upland, Indiana.

Both teams entered play unbeaten but Indiana Wesleyan survived to up their record to 3-0 overall, with all the wins coming in Mid-Central College Conference play. Taylor falls to 4-1 on the year and 2-1 in the MCC.

The Wildcats gained two out of three points in doubles play, which was a vital outcome as the teams split singles play.

Senior Luke Wright and junior Ben Bischoff earned an 8-4 win in No. 1-doubles as did sophomore Micah May and freshman Luke Montgomery with an 8-2 victory in No. 3 play. Sophomore Matt Pedersen and junior Carson VandenBossche fell 8-2 in No. 2-doubles action.

Taylor won the top two spots in singles play as Pederson dropped a 2-6, 7-6, 2-6 decision in No. 1-singles and Bischoff lost 2-6, 3-6 in No. 2 play.

VandenBossche prevailed 6-0, 6-1 in No. 3-singles but Wright suffered a 3-6, 0-6 defeat in the No. 4 match.

Indiana Wesleyan concluded the afternoon with wins in No. 5 and No. 6-singles as May earned a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6, 6-1 win and Montgomery triumphed 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to secure the 5-4 Wildcat victory.

IWU returns to the court at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 12, as the Wildcats travel to play Wilmington (Ohio) University.
