CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Four individuals and four doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament for the Indiana Wesleyan University tennis team.
Thursday marked the first of three days of the tennis tournament being played in Cedarville, Ohio.
For the women, three of the four individuals who competed in the tournament advanced to play on Friday with a pair of victories.
Senior Julia Hedgebeth advanced with an opening match win of 7-6, 7-5 and followed that with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. She is the No. 3-seed in No. 1-singles competition.
In No. 2-singles, sophomore Lisa Massey earned two wins by 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-1 to earn a spot in the final eight. Fellow sophomore, Eva Delk, advanced in No. 3-sinlges with wins of 6-3, 6-3 and later with a 6-1, 6-1 tally.
No. 4-sinlges player, sophomore Caitlin McGuire, earned a 7-5, 6-3 win in her first match, but lost 0-6, 5-7 to be eliminated.
In doubles, top-seeded Massey and Delk earned an 8-0 victory to advance to the quarterfinals in No. 1 action. The No. 3-doubles tandem of senior Laura Helm and junior Courtney Kooyers also advanced to Friday with an 8-1 win.
On the men's side, all players are in a single tournament.
One of two Wildcats advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play. Sophomore Matt Pederson, the No. 2-seed, earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory and followed that with a 6-2, 5-7 (10-0) win to move into the second day of play.
Junior Ben Bischoff captured a 6-3, 7-5 win but fell 3-6, 1-6 in his second match of the day.
Both doubles teams were victorious and advanced in the tournament. Bischoff and senior Luke Wright pulled off an 8-1 win while Pederson and junior Carson VandenBossche proceeded with an 8-4 win.
Day two of three will be played on Friday, September 19, in Cedarville, Ohio.
