CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Indiana Wesleyan University tennis teams will be well represented in the ITA Regional Finals.
Both the men and women's teams have an individual and doubles teams participating in the finals which will be played on Saturday in Cedarville, Ohio.
Sophomore Matt Pederson and the doubles team of senior Luke Wright and junior Ben Bischoff all earned a spot in the finals with a pair of wins on Friday. Pederson won 6-2, 0-6 and 10-5 in his first match and then won his semifinal contest 6-4, 6-4. Wright and Bischoff won 8-5 in the quarterfinals and won a semifinal thriller 8-8 (7-4).
Indiana Wesleyan's other double team in competition, junior Carson VandenBossche and Pederson, won 9-7 but lost 8-8 (5-7) in the semifinal.
For the women, sophomore Lisa Massey captured a birth in the finals with a 3-6, 7-5, 13-11 marathon which lasted over three hours. Shortly thereafter, Massey earned another hard-fought victory by scores of 4-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Senior Julia Hedgebeth advanced to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 win but lost her next match 3-6, 2-6. Sophomore Eva Delk lost her quarterfinal appearance 2-6, 0-6.
In doubles, the Wildcats' No. 3 tandem of senior Laura Helm and junior Courtney Kooyers defeated Huntington (Ind.) University's No. 1 team 8-4 and IU-Southeast's No. 1 team 8-4 to move into the championship match. IWU's No. 1 tandem of Massey and Delk won their first match 8-1 but lost 2-8 in the semifinals.
The ITA Midwest Regional championships will be played on Saturday, September 20, in Cedarville, Ohio.
