KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Indiana Wesleyan University men's and women's cross country teams took part in the Midwest Collegiate Open on Saturday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The Wildcat women placed second of 17 teams while the men finished fifth of 16.
For the women, No. 1-ranked Cedarville (Ohio) University separated from the field to win with 24 points. No. 14-ranked IWU was second with 103 points and host University of Wisconsin-Parkside, ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II, ended in third with 116 points.
Freshman Rebekah Bentle paced the women's team in her first collegiate run. She finished 14th of 222 runners as she ran a 19:39 on the 5,000-meter course.
The Wildcats second through fifth spots ran as a pack as they all completed their run within two seconds of each other.
Sophomore Cassidy Wagner was 20th (19:56), junior Laura Dziagwa (19:57), sophomore Melissa Morgan (19:58) and senior Christy Bea (19:58) placed 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th, respectively.
UW-Parkside senior Jessica Monson won the individual event with a 17:44.
On the men's side, University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse earned an easy victory with 40 points as their five runners finished in the top 13. NCAA Division II No. 12 Edinboro (Pa.) University was runner-up with 78 points. Indiana Wesleyan was fifth with 156 points and was the top NAIA program in the meet. IWU finished ahead of No. 24-ranked Cornerstone (Mich.) University, which finished eighth with 230 points.
Senior Josh Foss was the top finisher for the Wildcats in eighth place with a time of 26:36. There were 213 runners on the 8,000-meter course.
Freshman Ethan Naylor was next for Indiana Wesleyan in 12th place and a time of 26:41 while senior Bryan Hazel ran a 27:03, good enough for 19th place. Completing the Wildcats scoring were juniors Joel Liechty in 56th (28:45) and Doug Alles in 61st (28:58).
UW-LaCrosse's Paul Moran was the individual winner in 25:45.
Indiana Wesleyan next competes at the GRIAC Invitational on Saturday, September 27, in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
