NAIA #25 IWU Womens Soccer Scorches Trevecca Nazarene On Saturday, the Wildcats won their first match of 2007 in Nashville, TN against the Trojans of Trevecca Nazarene University. The temperature was 101 degrees at kickoff and the visiting squad cranked it up another notch with early pressure on the home team?s back line. After missing several opportunities in the first 10 minutes, Cat Turner , from nearby Franklin, TN, scored the first IWU goal on a header. Ashley Kitchens had passed the ball to Becca Mathews who then head flicked it to Turner. The Wildcats then failed to maintain defensive composure and allowed an unassisted goal less than a minute later. In the 27th minute freshmen Megan Marshall scored the game winner and her first goal of her intercollegiate career with the assist again coming from Mathews. The Trojans started pushing their back four up but Kate Turnow drove a through ball to Claire Comerouski when the opposition was coming forward. Comerouski scored on the breakaway. At the half, IWU lead 3-1. The Wildcats immediately began an onslaught of chances that resulted with an early goal in the second half by midfielder Ashley Kitchens with the assist coming from #9 Claire Comerouski. A few minutes later, right defender Sydney Bobo struck a 40 yard pass diagonally to Ashley Kitchens who had beat the backline of the Trojans for her 2nd goal of the match. Carly Comerouski broke through the Trevecca backline and was taken down in the penalty area. She calmly netted the penalty kick as the Wildcats increased their lead to 6-1. Former Marion Giant, April Singer rang the near post with a shot that bounced back to Megan Marshall. Marshall?s shot beat the keeper giving Singer an assist and Marshall, her second goal. All 25 members of the IWU squad received generous playing time including the use of all 4 keepers. Indiana Wesleyan outshot Trevecca 17-2. NAIA All American Gretchen Breckner sustained an injury early in the first half and was unable to continue. Her playing status is undetermined at this time. Coach Bratcher stated that he was ecstatic with the results considering the adverse conditions of the heat and early injury to their senior defensive center midfielder. The Wildcats of 2007 have 18 freshmen and sophomores on their 25 player squad. They return to action with their first home match on Tuesday, August 28th at 7 pm. The opponent will be Cedarville University of Cedarville, Ohio.
