MARION, Ind. (Results) -- The Indiana Wesleyan University indoor track and field teams had a strong showing on Saturday as IWU hosted the Wildcat Invitational.
The women were first among 13 teams and the men placed second of 16.
The IWU women tallied 149.25 points with Lindenwood (Mo.) University finishing second with 130.75 points. Aquinas (Mich.) College was third with 117.75 points.
In the men's meet, Lindenwood won the invitational with 168 points. The Wildcats had 102 points with Aquinas earning third with 91.5 points.
Four Wildcats earned automatic bids to the NAIA National Championships with their effort on Saturday while three others earned provisional bids.
For the women, Christy Bea earned an automatic qualifier in the 5,000-meter run. She won the race in 18:19.86, 13 seconds ahead of second place runner Beka Bentle in 18:32.60, which was fast enough for a provisional bid to the NAIA. Bea's time also set a new IWU Varsity record, besting Hillary Barlow's record of 18:22.17 in 2003.
In the long jump, Katelin Morgan earned a mark of 17-11 to earn a spot at the NAIA national meet. Her jumped netted her a second place finish at the meet.
On the men's side the two automatic qualifiers came in the distance races.
Josh Foss ran the mile in 4:17.96 and Bryan Hazel crossed the line in the 3,000-meter at 8:41.96. Each finished first in their respective race.
Foss also gained a provisional bid in the 800-meter with a time of 1:56.79. He finished second.
The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Hazel, Ethan Naylor, Dan Carrick and Eric Brown also gained provisional standing on Saturday as the squad finished in 7:58.58. The team paced the field with a first place finish.
A pair of men's varsity records were also broken. Eric Brown surpassed his own record in the 400-meter in 51.05 and the 4 x 200-meter relay team of Duran Brown, Eric Brown, Derek Gay and Thomas Collette set a new record of 1:31.77. The previous record was set a year ago at 1:32.95.
John Bowman earned a first place finish for the Wildcats in the shot put. His throw of 46-4.25 gave IWU 10 points.
Indiana Wesleyan will next compete at the NCCAA Championships on Saturday, February 21 in Cedarville, Ohio.
