Coming off a back-to-back National Christian College National Golf Championships in the fall of 2005 and 2006, Coach Steve Evans was named the NCCAA National Coach of the Year for the second straight year. He also was named the MCC Conference Coach of the Year in 2003 and again in 2007.
Through his passion and knowledge of the game of golf, Evans has helped develop the program into one of the most successful in the conference and Region VIII, as well as in the nation. Evans has overseen his student-athletes achieve ultimate success both on and off the course, having coached NAIA All-Americans in 2001 and 2003, NAIA All-American Honorable mention in 2004 and NAIA Academic All-Americans in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and an NAIA All American Academic team in 2006.
The wins, rankings, and accolades have all been note-worthy and significant, but it is the continued relationship and guidance that Evans provides his players that makes the program so special and successful. Evans is continuingly challenging his players to improve academically and grow spiritually, as well as succeed on the golf course. This relationship has been instrumental in his players striving for and achieving success in every aspect of their lives. Evans says that the success of the Wildcat golf program is built on the fundamentals of reaching young men for the Kingdom through the great game of golf.
Evans spends numerous hours behind the scenes working with his players on maximizing their potential and abilities. Evans can often be found in the gym working out with his players, preparing them for the demands of the upcoming season. Even outside the gym and the course, Evans will spend additional time mentoring players.
The players are quick to listen and learn from Evans and what he is instructing, as he has earned the reputation as being one of the best amateur golfers in the region. His years of experience and personal success make Evans highly respected, by his team and his peers.
Evans played for the 1977 team that holds the school record for lowest team score at 281 and is a nine-time club champion. Evans has also competed as an amateur in the prestigious Bob Hope Chrysler Pro-Am and the Callaway Pebble Beach Invitational, three U.S. Open qualifiers and two U.S. Senior Open qualifiers with his best finish making it to the second stage Regional qualifier in 2000.
